School Readiness Program for Children with Autism

Building Confidence, Independence, and Essential Skills for School Success

At Settle Down ABA Inc., we understand that preparing for school involves much more than learning letters, numbers, and classroom routines. For children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD), a successful transition into a school environment may require individualized support in communication, social interaction, emotional regulation, independence, and adaptive behavior.

Our School Readiness Program uses the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to help children develop foundational skills that support participation in preschool, kindergarten, and other educational settings.

Through individualized treatment planning, evidence-based teaching strategies, positive reinforcement, and collaboration with families, our clinical team helps children build the confidence and practical skills needed to navigate structured learning environments.

Every child learns differently. Our commitment is to help each child develop meaningful skills at their own pace while celebrating their individual strengths.

What Is School Readiness?

School readiness refers to the collection of developmental, behavioral, communication, and adaptive skills that help children participate meaningfully in educational environments.

For children with autism, readiness may involve learning to communicate needs, participate in group activities, follow classroom routines, interact with peers, transition between activities, and develop greater independence in daily tasks.

At Settle Down ABA, school readiness is not measured solely by age or academic achievement. Instead, our Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) evaluate each child's individual abilities, developmental needs, and treatment goals to identify skills that may improve their participation in educational settings.

Our program integrates structured instruction, naturalistic teaching opportunities, play-based learning, and caregiver collaboration to promote practical skills that children can apply across environments.

The objective is not to require every child to learn or behave in the same way, but to equip each child with meaningful skills and appropriate supports that promote confidence, self-advocacy, and independence.

Core Areas of School Readiness Development

Communication & Language Development

Helping children express their wants and needs, ask for assistance, understand instructions, and use individualized communication systems, including augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) when appropriate.

Social Interaction & Peer Engagement

Developing skills for shared play, interacting with peers, participating in cooperative activities, and building meaningful social connections while respecting individual communication preferences.

Classroom Routines & Learning Participation

Supporting participation in group activities, following individualized visual schedules, transitioning between activities, attending to learning opportunities, and understanding familiar classroom expectations.

Independence & Daily Living Skills

Encouraging age-appropriate independence with personal belongings, handwashing, dressing routines, asking for assistance, and other functional skills that contribute to participation in the school day.

Emotional Regulation & Coping Skills

Teaching functional strategies to communicate discomfort, request breaks, manage transitions, access appropriate supports, and respond to environmental demands in ways that promote emotional well-being

Foundational Learning & Problem-Solving

Building skills such as matching, sorting, imitation when functionally relevant, responding to instructional cues, task engagement, and flexible problem-solving to support future learning opportunities.

Benefits of School Readiness Programming

Helping Children Prepare for New Learning Environments

A thoughtfully designed school readiness program can help children strengthen foundational skills that support their participation in school, home, and community activities.

Potential benefits include:

  • Greater independence: Building confidence in completing everyday routines with appropriate levels of support.

  • Improved functional communication: Helping children express needs, preferences, and emotions and advocate for assistance.

  • Meaningful peer connections: Encouraging opportunities for play, cooperation, and interaction with other children.

  • Increased participation in learning: Supporting engagement in structured and play-based educational activities.

  • Stronger transition skills: Helping children navigate changes in activities, routines, and environments.

  • Development of coping strategies: Promoting emotional regulation, flexibility, and appropriate self-advocacy.

  • Family confidence and preparedness: Equipping parents and caregivers with strategies to support their child's transition into educational settings.

Our goal is to help children enter new learning environments with a stronger foundation of functional skills, individualized supports, and opportunities for continued developmental growth.

An Individualized Approach to School Readiness

At Settle Down ABA, we recognize that no two children share the same developmental profile, learning style, or support needs.

Under the supervision of a Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA), treatment begins with an individualized assessment of the child's strengths, communication abilities, adaptive functioning, social development, and behavioral support needs.

When clinically appropriate, the treatment team develops measurable goals focused on functional school-related skills. These goals are incorporated into the child's ABA treatment plan and monitored through ongoing clinical assessment and data collection.

Our approach may include:

  • Individualized, developmentally appropriate learning objectives.

  • Naturalistic and structured teaching opportunities.

  • Visual schedules, communication supports, and personalized routines.

  • Positive reinforcement and strengths-based instruction.

  • Generalization of skills across people, settings, and activities.

  • Regular progress monitoring and modifications to treatment goals.

School readiness objectives are selected based on each child's assessed clinical needs. Instruction is designed to complement educational services rather than replace academic instruction or school-based special education supports.

Partnering with Families for a Successful Transition

Families play an essential role in helping children prepare for new educational experiences.

Our BCBAs work collaboratively with parents and caregivers to identify meaningful goals, develop strategies for practicing skills at home, and help children prepare for changes associated with entering preschool, kindergarten, or another school environment.

Parent and caregiver training may include developing predictable morning routines, practicing communication strategies, supporting independence, preparing for unfamiliar environments, and building coping skills for transitions.

When appropriate and with parent or guardian authorization, our clinical team may collaborate with other professionals involved in the child's care to help support continuity of treatment strategies.

At Settle Down ABA, we believe meaningful progress is built through compassionate care, family partnership, and individualized support that respects every child's unique abilities.
